Hello all,
I've been MIA -- busy, busy. Some time back a couple of quilting friends and I gave a presentation about quilting to a group of girls called "God's Girls." (elementary age) There was quite a bit of interest in the quilting process and that evolved into a two day class in which several of our King's Quilters members taught basic hand sewing. Our girls all made a block which they turned into a pot holder. Some of the girls were able to make two blocks. It was a great event and I took pictures to share with you. Well, today my camera died! I can still take the memory card out and have it saved on a DVD but I can't do that today. So, please know that there are pictures coming!

I'm tired. By nine am we had eaten breakfast -- all the old blinds were down along with the curtains -- the windows were washed as well as the window sills and the kitchen light. At nine we started on the yard and by ten we had mowed, edged, and swept. Next came the shower and shampoo.

Shortly after 10 the man with the blinds came and by 11 am our new faux wood blinds were installed. By 11:30 the curtains were back up and the furniture was back in place and I was having lunch! By 12:30 I had eaten lunch and also cooked a package of fajita chicken thighs and had them cut and ready for tonight's dinner. Nap time! Yep, I was tired.

After we rested we shopped a little and then returned to prepare the dinner -- poblano chilies stuffed with the chicken and brown rice. It was yummy!
I bet we sleep good tonight!

Drawing A Man

Earlier I told a funny story about my Dad. Now I want to tell one about my oldest brother, G.
All of my brothers are younger and three of us kids were born in Sept, with birthdays 1 week apart. Because Sept 1 is usually the cut-off date for starting school, three of us went to private school the first year. (This was before kindergarten was added to the school line-up)

When it was time for G to start school he was to go to Mrs. Young's Private School. At the interview, Mrs. Young told my brother that she wanted him to draw a man. "First," she said," I want you to draw his head. Next, draw his body. Next draw his legs, and last, draw his arms."
My brother followed her instruction and then handed her his paper. She looked at it and her eyes got big. "Oh, my." she said. "I've never seen anything like this."
Can you imagine the concern my Mother felt at that point!
Mrs Young shared the picture with my Mother. There was the man -- the head, the body, the arms, and the legs. HOWEVER, they were not joined! The head was in one place -- the body in another -- and so on with the arms and legs. All the pieces were there -- he had drawn them just as he was instructed. Separately!
Mrs Young did accept him in her school and I'm happy to say that he did well there. I think Mrs. Young kept his "man paper." however, because it was so unique.
As this day winds down I'm thinking it has been a good one! Our Nifty After Fifty luncheon was fun. There was a good turn out -- most of them first timers, as we were. They are going to have to purchase a couple more tables because we ran out of room. Lots of good food -- my Poppy Seed Chicken was a hit and I had to give out the recipe. It is so simple that anyone can make it!

The a/c repairman came and the funny noise was being caused by a piece of paper that was in the fan drum. Everything else was fine -- Praise the Lord!

Gracie is happy because her doughnut dog is back home! We left her favorite toy in Abq and she was really missing it. OD sent it, and put three new chew bones in with the toy. Gracie was excited about the smell of the box -- do you think it smelled like Ronan, Daisy, and Bear? When we took the toy out she got really excited and started playing right away. We didn't show her the new bones because she would want them immediately. Right now she is beside me on the couch gnawing on the bone she brought home from Abq. It is MUCH smaller now.
Rob, thank you for making her a happy little doggy!
What a busy week! Monday we worked out, pulled a few weeds, and did some laundry. Yesterday I did the data entry at Katy Christian Ministries. While I was gone Sweetie put Gracie in the shower and she definitely smells better!
Today we are going to a luncheon after our workout and then this afternoon we will have our a/c checked. It seems to be making a different noise. I pray it is ok -- those things are expensive to repair.
Tomorrow our new faux wood blinds will be installed! Sweetie has taken down the old blinds and we are talking about new drapes in the dining room. I'll send pictures once the blinds are up. My Mom got hers installed and we loved them when we were there in May. Sure will change the look in our house. We already love the vertical blinds we put in the master bedroom. Also, tomorrow is the day we mow. We got some rain yesterday and our yard is looking really good!

I have Poppy Seed Chicken in the oven -- it is going to be my contribution to the luncheon. It is yummy! Then we will just have a salad for dinner so Sweetie can go to choir and I can stay home and do some more cutting. I've got two quilts in the square-cutting stages and need to cut some more. I DON"T have a new accuquilt cutter! :-(

What are you guys doing? Anything fun??

Remembering Daddy

Today is Father's Day -- the second one since I lost my Dad. I was just thinking about him and remembering something that happened when I was in high school.

We had just moved to Ft. Stockton and my Dad, who had driven a truck for years, was now home at normal hours. Daddy met a man named Harry and the two guys would go coon hunting at night. Harry had a pack of hunting dogs and they would go out into a wooded area and let the dogs chase raccoons. Dad had a wonderful time.

One day I opened the refrigerator and found a large foil wrapped package inside. I asked what it was and my Dad told me that they had treed a particularly large raccoon the night before and that they dressed it and that we were having it for dinner that night. Hummmmm. OK, I guess I'll try it.

Sure enough, that night we had a piece of meat that I didn't recognize and sure enough, my Dad told me that it was the raccoon. It was really good and I was hoping that Daddy and Harry would find another raccoon soon.

Later in the week my Great-Uncle called when I was the only one at home. As we chatted I mentioned that we had eaten raccoon a couple of days earlier. "Really?" asked my Uncle.
Oh, yes, I said, and it was really good! He was quiet a minute or two and then asked me to have my Dad call him when he got home. I forgot.

Days later I remembered to tell him and my Dad made the call.
He was puzzled to have my Uncle offer to loan him some money. If things were tight he had only to ask! Daddy asked why Uncle thought things were that tight that he would need to borrow money. "Well," said my Uncle," Anita told me that you guys had raccoon for dinner and I thought that if things were that bad you might need to borrow some money." My Dad had a big laugh over that and explained that we hadn't eaten raccoon -- we had eaten cabrito. (baby goat)

My Dad asked me not to go around telling people that we were eating raccoon anymore. (Evidently, raccoon is a musky tasting meat and it isn't usually eaten.) It was one of my Dad's practical jokes that backfired!

Happy Father's Day

More Mall of the Americas

As we walked around the groud floor of the Mall of the Americas we found this memorial. Thought I'd share it with you!

A friendly woman passing by volunteered to take our picture. Here I am with Sweetie and my oldest daughter.

In the Air

I took these pictures on the way to Minneapolis last month. The one on the bottom is the great lake that borders Chicago. Which one is it? (Yes, I know I could get a map and look but this is more fun.) This was my first view of one of the Great Lakes! (On my previous two trips to Chicago I somehow did not see the lake.) Can anyone answer my "silly" question? (Quotes are for you, DI!)

Mall of the Americas

More from the amusement park in the Mall of the Americas.

This picture is something unusual we saw in Minnesota. The building pictured is a Holiday Inn.
See those tubes that come out of the building in one place and then go back inside in another place? Those, I am told, are part of the water slide. One enters the tube at one point, slides down the tube going out and then back in, eventually ending up in the indoor swimming pool.
We saw these same tubes in a couple of other places. My question: What happens in the winter.
Are they used then? Wouldn't the water freeze? Does anyone have an answer for this? I'd love to hear from you.

Legos at Mall of the Americas

The center of the Mall of the Americas is a large amusement park. One of the features is a big Legos store with many models. I've posted four of them. From each floor one can see more models displayed. These were all on the ground level except for the motorcycle.

We had a lovely weekend -- it was great to be back at church. I had missed my Pastor and my church family!

Sunday night we went to "Family Game Night" at church -- had a really good time. We played Chicken Foot and then learned a new game, Swap. It seems to be a cross between "Slap Jack" and Uno. It was nice just sitting and playing and laughing with friends.

Friday night we went to a Farewell party for a family in our church -- the father is a Lay-Pastor and has accepted a call to a little Baptist church on High Island. They will move to the parsonage there. We hated to lose this family, but can't ask them to stay if they are being called somewhere else. Going to be hard for their kids -- not many teens on High Island. The mother of this family died a couple of years ago so it will be Dad and the two girls. The brother is in college.

My Mom called to tell me that the puppy she was going to get died. The neighbor lost her entire litter of puppies to Parvovirus. So sad. We need to find my Mom another puppy/dog. She really enjoys the company they are to her.

This week is VBS at a nearby church. I am taking my granddaughter -- we missed going to the one at our church since I was still out of town. She's having fun.

What is going on with all of you?

FYI

I'm taking the cue from my blog friend, Doug, and I'm adding to entries that I've already posted.
You can range back as far as May 20 and find that pictures and new information has been added.
There is more to come, so stay tuned!

We visited our friends in Marble Falls -- B watered her garden - then, after she finished watering it came a downpour! Gracie was quite excited about all the deer that came up to the fence.

Home Sweet Home

We are home again -- we had a great trip but it was very nice to get back to our own home. I'm sure it will take us a while to get everything unpacked and put back in place but there is no hurry -- after all, we are retired!
The picture I posted shows that it is still beautiful in the Hill Country. This was taken on the road between Mason and Llano, TX.

Aguirre Springs/Organ Mountains, NM

When Sweetie and I lived in El Paso we often visited Aguirre Springs, a campsite in the nearby Organ mountains. Last week we drove up there with our grandson, to see it once again. The mountains were beautiful and the park much as I last saw it. It was "improved" after we stopped going there -- the road was paved and it is much easier to get to. Not the same park we loved but still being visited by many families. This picture is of the Organ Mountains. You can't see Aguirre Springs campground until you are there.

In Big Spring, TX tonight --it is 108 degrees -- just attended visitation for my cousin, Nita Fay Graves Cypert. Nita had been battling cancer for many years. Thursday she suffered an extreme reaction to a new chemo and died. She will be sorely missed.

After leaving El Paso we attempted to stay at the Balmorhea State Park but it was pouring rain when we arrived. We went on to Ft. Stockton but even though the rain had stopped there, it was still wet. We ended up in a motel room where we stayed nice and dry.

Today we traveled east again -- ate lunch along side the San Saba river in Menard, TX. (see picture) It was a nice time. Sweetie and Grace took a walk along the river while I fixed our lunch.

Arrived in Marble Falls to visit friends -- had time to see the garden before the rain began. It rained and thundered and blew and lots of lightening flashed. We ate spaghetti for dinner and are having a great time visiting. Tomorrow the friends are going on a long-planned kayak trip while Sweetie and I visit a quilt shop in Kingsland.
(Thursday evening we drove over to Johnson City to eat dinner with our friends. It was a lovely evening but after dinner we received a call to tell us that my cousin, Nita, passed away. We will turn back and go to her funeral.)
